The official name for this section of the carnival is Gala De Elección De La Reina Infantil. This Little Queen was elected Saturday the 15th and we helped create the house that features in the set! We could not show this before she was elected as all costumes must be kept secret until after elections, we have been sworn to secrecy (it is a competition after all!).
This was the starting point for the work we did on the house. The first picture was the cutting out of the bricks (7cm x 13cm) from two different coloured foam sheets. We then cut out the glittered strips and glued them to the left side and the base. We did this over and over until we had enough bricks to cover the house.
In this picture Santi was showing me how to lay the bricks properly. He is so lovely, helpful and talented. His designs won the past two years so this puts big pressure on us to get everything right for the main event! But he doesn't treat us, or the other workers like employees he treats everyone more like friends and family, making us lunch and dinner and giving us little treats like cake and chocolate! Working with him is more of a treat.
This was my side of the wall finished. It took me hours to get it perfect but I was very happy with it by the end.
This is Saskia laying the roof tiles and our lovely Spanish co-worker Lola adding gems to the bricks. She teaches us bits of Spanish as she has very good English from living in Dublin for two years. It's handy to keep learning Spanish as no one here speaks English which makes simple things very difficult. This project was very challenging but rewarding and we are thoroughly enjoying the experience
